Revolutionizing Salon Design: G Space by Ming-Hong Tsai and Zhi-Yin Liao

Challenging Traditional Layouts and Creating a Multilevel, Functional Pleasure

In a world where design and functionality often collide, Ming-Hong Tsai and Zhi-Yin Liao have created a unique hair salon design that challenges traditional layouts and creates a multilevel, functional pleasure. Their design, G Space, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, making it a winner of the prestigious A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018.

G Space is a hair salon that breaks away from the norm. Traditionally, the rinse area is placed at the back of the salon for easier pipe arrangement. However, Tsai and Liao decided to place it in the center of the salon, creating different levels and strengths using various plane configurations. This innovative approach has resulted in a space that showcases different allocated areas through design.

Despite the project being an 8-meter site, the designers have managed to create a multilevel and functional space by dividing districts and placing cubes strategically. The use of almost 300 LED bulbs creates the image of hair waves in the air, adding a unique visual element to the salon.

The materials used in the construction of G Space include concrete, reclaiming timber, Reclaimed Wood, welded wire mesh, bamboo steel bars, faux cement paint, rust iron plate, black iron plate, expanded metals, red copper, hexagonal brick, galvanized steel pipe, and corrugated steel sheet. The result is an industrial-style salon with a vintage touch, reflecting a new oriental style.

One of the key challenges faced during the design process was lighting. Lighting is crucial in a hair salon, and the designers had to ensure that the LED lights and working lights wouldn't affect the operators. They conducted simulations and tests to achieve the optimal lighting conditions. Additionally, they adjusted the height of the air conditioning duct and used the stack effect to reduce the waste of air conditioning, demonstrating their commitment to energy efficiency.

Another unique feature of G Space is the bar at the entry, designed to provide customers with comfort and relaxation. The designers also built a hallway to limit the view and create a sense of mystique. At the end of the hallway, customers are greeted with a spacious space filled with almost 300 LED bulbs, creating a visually stunning experience.

In conclusion, G Space by Ming-Hong Tsai and Zhi-Yin Liao is a testament to the power of innovative design. By challenging traditional layouts and creating a multilevel, functional space, they have revolutionized the concept of a hair salon. Their design has not only won them a prestigious award but also set a new benchmark in salon design.
